Wedde Creek Savanna features an oak savanna located in northern Marquette County. The site is easily accessed from a parking area on the south side of Deerborn Avenue, just east of CTH Y. There are no trails, but the open landscape is easy to explore.
Though the rain had abated by the time I reached Wedde Creek Savanna, my bad luck for the day had not. I arrived at the savanna to find that it had been subject to a prescribed burn a few weeks prior, which resulted in a paucity of obserable species. The bright purple flowers of bird’s-foot violet were welcome bright spots amidst the gloomy sky, brown grasses, and charred logs. Quite clearly, this is a site that I need to revisit, preferrably not after a recent burn. I will plan for a June revisit to hopefully catch the savanna in a more ‘productive’ state.
