Adiantum Woods features a gradient of forest types from mesic to dry on a slope overlooking the Wisconsin River across from Wauzeka. An access road leads north from CTH C to a parking area. Walk 1 mile north and then west on an old two-track logging road through a field to the southern boundary of the site.
It is a rather long walk through an uninspiring area replete with invasive daisies and clover. On the bright side on this gloomy day, the undulating terrain bobbed up and down as I made my way toward the natural area on the banks of the Wisconsin River. The forest is on a rather steep slope of which the wet weather of the day precluded much downslope exploration. Virginia waterleaf, wild columbine, and wild geranium were scattered about the forest floor with ferns, downed trees, and saplings mixed in. All told, this is a site that I would like to explore (again, on a drier day – no one wants to slide down into the river!).
