Snapper Prairie is a low prairie surrounded by agricultural fields in Jefferson County. It is not the easiest site to find because access is via an unmarked farm lane off of County Highway G. That dead-ends right at the prairie.
I have visited this site three times and the weather has been remarkably similar each time: overcast and cool. Having visited in the summer and the autumn, I was able to observe a great array of prairie wildflowers. In summer, black-eyed susan’s, dwarf prairie roses, and prairie dock. As the seasons change, so do the species. Nodding lady’s tresses, and an array of goldenrods and asters marked the landscape in late September. I still feel I haven’t seen this area at its peak and certainly haven’t seen it on a photogenic day, so that is definitely on the list to do again.
