VanderBloemen Bog features an open bog and hardwood swamp in Manitowoc County. Owned by Silver Lake College, this site requires permission from the College for visitation. Its location is not described by the DNR and will not be described here, though it is not difficult to find.
My lasting memories of VanderBloemen Bog are the pitcher plants and the mosquitoes, oh the mosquitoes. The density of pitcher plants was quite high, perhaps higher than I have seen it elsewhere. Bogbean was also observed in flower with its frilly white petals. Ths mosquitoes were easily the worst I have encountered in my years of exploring the great state of Wisconsin. Despite a head net and repellant, even having a hand exposed to take a photograph was a painful endeavor. The overcast sky that had plagued much of the day now turned to a light drizzle. I thank Silver Lake College for allowing me to explore the bog, brief though it may have been. I most certainly plant to visit this site again and spend a good deal more time exploring it in detail.
