Rhine Center Bog includes a bog lake surrounded by a southern wet-mesic forest in north-central Sheboygan County. A large gravel parking area is located on the east side of STH 57 just northwest of Rhine Center and just south of the intersection of STH 57 and CTH EH.
From the parking area, an informal trail winds through the pines and then parallel to the shore of the lake, but a decent distance away from it. A view of the lake requires a trip through the wet-mesic forest, which was particularly wet on this day. Even with rubber boots, it was not possible to stay dry. The highlights of this area were the lush green understory of skunk cabbage and a variety of ferns. I mostly explored the eastern shoreline area. Given more time, I would like to investigate the tamaracks near the southern shore. On this day, however, the final destination was Point Beach State Forest and a couple of stops along the way awaited.
