Chub Lake Oak Savanna, SNA #607 (143/675)

Chub Lake Oak Savanna features, appropriately enough an oak savanna on the southwest shore of Chub Lake.  It borders Chub & Mud Lake Riverine Marsh SNA on its northern edge and quite frankly, I do not know why it was designated as a separate natural area.  Its size (21 acres) pales in comparison to its neighbor (1987 acres).  A parking area is found on Hubbleton Road and a foot-trail leads into the forest.

To put it bluntly, this site could be in better shape.  There are large oaks that are quite impressive but the typical oak savanna ground layer is not present.  This site needs a lot of work and in today’s political climate, the budget just is not there leading to lack of personnel, time, and materials.  With that said, I have visited here twice and will probably do so a few more times, especially if I am in the area exploring the nearby marsh.  Perhaps the flora would be a bit more exciting in early spring, rather than mid-June and late September, the times of my previous visits.  Time will tell.
