Another classic Wisconsin forest is found at New Observatory Woods. As this is a University of Wisconsin Board of Regent-owned parcel and permission is required from the UW Arboretum to visit, I will not disclose the location. The forest ranges from wet in some areas to more mesic in others. Red oaks are most common here, but white, black, and burr oaks are also present. There is said to be a small prairie remnant here, but I am thinking that description must be quite dated as I saw no such area on either of my visits there. Even though I have permission to view these places, I always get the feeling that someone is going to ask why I am there. No one ever has, though I always keep a copy of my permission slip (as it were) with me just in case.
