Sander’s Park Hardwoods features a southern dry-mesic forest on two swells flanking a swale. It is found in the center of Sander’s County Park on Wood Road in Racine County and is bounded by the main park loop, Exculpating Road. Two parking areas are found near the northwest corner of the site. A network of trails criss-crosses the natural area.
I visited Sander’s Park Hardwoods on my route home from Chiwaukee Prairie earlier in the day. As this was early October, the fall colors were resplendent both on the trees and composing the freshly fallen carpet of leaves. A picturesque footbridge provided additional photographic opportunities. In terms of blooming species, several asters and goldenrods were noted, as was white snakeroot. This is a very easy site to explore and the park provides additional ammenities including picnic areas and campsites. It would be an easy walk for any little ones that tag along. The natural area is said to boast an impressive array of spring wildflowers and so I would like to return again soon, perhaps on the same day I return to Chiwaukee. So many places, so little time!

Sanders is very nice in the spring, I visited once a week last spring during COVID and it saved my sanity. Deer sitings are frequent. Summer gets somewhat mosquito-y.
